Celebrates 34th Year of Free Musical Performances on May 28-29, 2011

ATLANTA, GA (May 24, 2011) – The City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs announced the addition of a concert featuring Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews to close out the 34th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival (AJF), which culminates on Memorial Day May 30th. The New Orleans native will showcase his innovative sound— an unprecedented mix of jazz, funk, rock, hip-hop and soul. “After his amazing performance last year, I’m absolutely thrilled that Trombone Shorty will be returning to join the long list of jazz greats who have been part of the Atlanta Jazz Festival since 1977,” said Camille Russell Love, Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs. "His energy and creativity personifies the spirit of the Festival, and his youthful edge aligns with our goal this year—to cultivate the legacy of jazz.”

One of the last free jazz festivals in the U.S., the Atlanta Jazz Festival is a family-oriented event designed to entertain, educate and expose a variety of audiences to jazz. For two full days, [11:00 am - 9:00 pm] the festival will feature something for everyone, including an eclectic mix of straight-ahead, traditional and contemporary jazz, Latin, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz. This year’s festival will pay homage to a wide array of jazz genres with performances on two stages—the main stage and the new international stage— on May 28th & 29th in Piedmont Park.  See full schedule below:

In addition to live musical performances, attendees can enjoy the AJF Marketplace, which features food and retail vendors.  Other festival-related activities include:

  • NBA Nation:  The ultimate fan zone with interactive games for all ages
  • Beer Garden: Adults ages 21 and up can join beer aficionados from Hops City at the Anheuser Busch tent to talk “Jazz and Brews”
  • Kids Zone: Children will have an opportunity play games and have their faces painted
  • And other family-friendly experiences presented by festival sponsors such as Miss Jessie’s, the U.S. Tennis Association, American Family Insurance and ESSIE.

Park Rules, Recycling and Traffic Updates

Pets and charcoal grills are prohibited in the park per City of Atlanta festival ordinance. Service animals for disabled persons are permitted, however.

Through its partnership with 511Live.com and the GA Department of Transportation, AJF attendees can get real-time traffic updates and information on parking if needed. During the festival, 10th Street – between Monroe and Charles Allen Drive - will be closed to thru traffic.
