Discussion to be Moderated by Tony Martignetti Nonprofit Radio

DALLAS, Texas (February 3, 2014)—Tony Martignetti Nonprofit Radio today announced the February 21, 2014 radio show highlighting the Atlas of Giving and Giving USA, the two groups that publish estimates of U.S. philanthropy. Both The Atlas of Giving and Giving USA will discuss their respective approaches to calculating nonprofit giving as part of the internet-based streaming radio program. Representatives from both organizations will participate in this debate February 21 from 1:00p.m. to 2:00p.m. (EST.) The live discussion will be moderated by Tony Martignetti, host of Tony Martignetti Nonprofit Radio at http://tonymartignetti.com.

“There have been several opinions floating around since Atlas of Giving’s January 21 announcement, which cited that U.S. charitable giving reached an all-time high of $417 billion in 2013,” Tony Martignetti, said. “This announcement created a firestorm of controversy in the philanthropic news media, so we wanted to create a dialogue for both organizations to deliberate about their methods.”

Giving USA will not release its own estimate of 2013 giving until later this year, but representatives from the organization expressed disagreement with the Atlas of Giving estimate last month. Not only are there differences in past estimates published by the two groups (in 2012, their respective estimates of total giving were almost $50 billion apart), there is also discussion regarding the validity of the methodologies employed by each group to estimate charitable giving behavior.

The Atlas of Giving publishes a monthly report which contains, in addition to historical giving data, the only forecast of charitable giving in the U.S. Giving USA publishes an annual report each June which provides estimates of giving for the prior calendar year.

In addition to estimating total U.S. giving, both organizations provide estimates of giving by both charitable sector (education, the arts, healthcare, etc.) and gift source (individuals, corporations, foundations and bequests).

The live streaming broadcast will take place on Friday, February 21, 2014 from 1:00p.m. to 2:00p.m. (EST.) The link to the live broadcast is http://tonymartignetti.com.

The Atlas of Giving is an economic intelligence tool created to measure and reliably forecast charitable giving in the United States. The Atlas of Giving was originally engineered by Philanthromax, LLC in 2010. Data from the Atlas of Giving is gathered from a series of proprietary algorithms using multiple economic and demographic variables. The algorithms match published giving data for the last 42 years with a 99.5% coefficient of correlation. The Atlas of Giving accounts for the entire giving economy and is the most precise and timely measurement of total charitable giving in the United States, as well as the only giving forecast.
