Universal Music Group finds a new home in Slakthusområdet

The iconic market halls of Slakthusområdet are being transformed into unique offices and premises. At the beginning of 2026, the transformation will be completed and Hus 49 Stora Marknadshallen will become the new home of Universal Music Group. The contract with Atrium Ljungberg covers approximately 3,800 m2 and marks yet another milestone in the development of Stockholm’s new creative district.

Slakthusområdet is being developed into a new meeting place for food, culture and experiences alongside workplaces for leading creative companies in a changing and dynamic cluster. The creative night-life featuring restaurants, bars and clubs has already moved into the area. Another step is now being taken to create a vibrant site every hour of the day.

Atrium Ljungberg has signed a contract with Universal Music Group (UMG), which is gathering all of its Stockholm operations under one roof: record company Universal Music, publisher Universal Music Publishing and live agency United Stage. UMG plays a central role in the Swedish musical miracle and represents many of Sweden’s and the world’s largest artists. The company is moving in to the larger of the two market halls, which, between now and occupancy in early 2026, will be rebuilt into an extraordinary office space.

Universal Music Group will thus become the first company to move into its own building at Slakthusområdet – one of the original buildings from 1912 that is now being transformed into one-of-a-kind office environments. The establishment marks a large stride forward in the area’s development, fully in line with the location’s vision and clear progressive identity anchored in culture and music. UMG will become a neighbour to other creative companies such as the booking company FKP Scorpio and co-working member club A house.

Joakim Johansson, Managing Director, Universal Music Sweden:
“As Sweden’s leading music company, we are always at the forefront, driving development in our industry. We connect with the most interesting artists, and we want to be an attractive workplace to bring in the best employees. Our range of services is constantly developing, and collecting all of our companies and resources under one roof is a step in leading this development forward. We look forward to building our new home in Slakthusområdet, which has its own identity and character."

Jonas Wikström, Managing Director, Universal Music Publishing Scandinavia:
To be able to create an entirely new office from the ground up with each of our company’s branches gathered under one roof is fantastic. I look forward to the new opportunities this will bring, as well as to how, in symbiosis with our songwriters and artists, we will add more of a musical imprint onto Slakthusområdet, a part of Stockholm that is undergoing an exciting transformation.”

Anders Larsson, CEO, United Stage Sweden:
It truly feels like Slakthusområdet will become the leading creative area in Stockholm, where a long list of companies from the music industry will gather in the future. Gathering all of our competence under one roof and also having as neighbours several club and concert venues where many of our artists regularly perform will create lots of opportunities. Fållan is basically next door, and Globen, Tele2 and Annexet are only a short walk away.”

Martha Åhlund, VP People, Inclusion and Culture, Universal Music Group:
For us at Universal Music Group, this presents an incredible opportunity to create a new home for our creative and unique work environment. We have grown out of our old premises, and to have the possibility to influence the design of our new workplace has been a priority for us. The office should be a place where the individual needs of our employees are met so that everyone is able to achieve the best personal development in their work. We will work closely with the architect, the work environment representative and our employees to create spaces that everyone feels connected to, a place where employees feel included, proud and part of the team – a creative place with a good and healthy work environment. This will be a new and exciting step in our shared journey to build the talents of the future in the music industry.”

Slakthusområdet is undergoing a transformation, and it will gradually open up for more activities. Over the past year, the old halls of Slakthushallarna have come back to life with restaurants such as Solen, Bar Montan, Afrika, the listening bar Hosoi, and the coffee roasting house Stockholm Roast. Earlier this year, the culture and concert arena Fållan opened next to Förbindelsehallen and will host concerts, clubs and various events.

“We are very pleased and proud that Universal Music Group will become part of Slakthusområdet. The place will be created by the actors located here, and we want to offer the space, both physically and conceptually, for this to happen. The activities and businesses that find their way here are all creative and have exceptional passion and drive. Gathering such initiative and commitment in one place will create magic,” says Petter Klingofström, Leasing Manager at Atrium Ljungberg.

The lease contract with UMG is a so-called green lease contract. This is when the landlord and the tenant agree on joint measures to retain or improve the environmental performance of the premises. Hus 49 Stora Marknadshallen has a total letting area of approximately 4,300 m2. The total investment for the renovation of the property amounts to approximately SEK 300 million, including land allocations.
