British National Cycling Champion Alex Dowsett Teams Up With Audio-Technica
Leeds, UK, 19-09-2013: Leading headphone manufacturer Audio-Technica has released the latest in its ‘Audio-Technica Sessions’ video series, featuring professional cyclist Alex Dowsett. The video can be found on Audio-Technica’s YouTube channel at http://bit.ly/169Fqnp
Dowsett – a three-time National Time Trial champion and Movistar Team rider – is currently competing in the Tour of Britain (15-22 September) before heading to the UCI Road World Championships alongside Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish.
A fan of Audio-Technica’s ATH-CKP500 and CKP200 sports and ATH-ANC9 noise-cancelling models, Dowsett uses the headphones for training, travelling and motivation during race warm-ups. His video interview contains exclusive ‘on the bike’ footage from training sessions and focuses on the impact music has on his preparation for competition and in coping with the demands of endurance training.
Dowsett’s experience is in keeping with research (see Editor’s Note below) that demonstrates the measurable effects music has on the behaviour and psychological states of exercise participants. Benefits include enhancement of positive feelings and distraction – and the use of music can even promote relaxation and efficiency in long-duration activities.
As Dowsett says, “In the warm-up for a time-trial I really have to concentrate on getting my head ‘in the zone’, because it’s as much a mental as a physical challenge. I have to put myself through so much pain during the race and I have to be fully prepared to go for it from the start. A big part of that is having music on to get me motivated, which is where my CKP headphones play a vital role.”
Audio-Technica CKP in-ear sports models are designed for great sound and optimum comfort while exercising, with interchangeable ear-tips that allow a tailored fit. Their IPX5 waterproof rating means the headphones are resistant to sweat and can even be washed after use.
The ATH-ANC9 headphone is Audio-Technica’s flagship noise-cancelling model, featuring Tri-Level cancellation with three modes targeting specific ambient noise frequencies for use in different environments. Luxurious foam padding and large 40mm drivers contribute to real comfort during long listening sessions and deliver beautifully balanced tone.

Editor’s Note
The BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences) Expert Statement on the Use of Music in Exercise (first published in The Sport And Exercise Scientist, Issue 28, Summer 2011), states that, “Effects of music prior to exercise and sport have been studied extensively. Pre-task music has been shown to act as an effective stimulant that can optimise arousal level and psychological states (see Terry & Karageorghis, 2011)… Use of asynchronous music provides both psychological (distraction and enhancement of positive feelings) and ergogenic (performance-enhancing) benefits.”
