Aurora Clinics: Experts at treating PIP Implant Patients

Aurora Clinics have never used PIP Implants: but are experts at treating patients with these type of implants.

Mr. Adrian Richards (voted 'Leading Breast Surgeon UK' by The Independent on Sunday) is offering free consultations to patients concerned about their breast implants, advice via telephone, email or in person and the ability to arrange an ultrasound or implant replacement with the Aurora Clinics team of specialists.

This support is being offered by Aurora following this morning’s official UK Watchdog statement. Despite claims that PIP silicone breast implants ‘have no cancer link’ and there is no need for women with the French implant brand to have them removed, sources such as the BBC News and BAAPS press office have been quick to claim the statement ‘plays down’ the reliability of the implants themselves, saying :

"These implants have a higher failure rate so there will be women who might choose to have their implants removed before that happens, whereas others will be happy to be monitored."

Clearly the general public (up to 40,000 UK women are believed to have PIP implants) also remain less than convinced by the advice to ‘not panic’. In fact, the bulletin may have had an adverse effect if the non-stop ringing phones at Aurora Clinics are any indication of public feeling. The majority, says Patient Co-ordinator Sarah Benger, want to find out what implant make they have for peace of mind: just the mention of the word ‘cancer’ in relation to breast implants has caused alarm.

The advice from Mr. Richards (Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, Clinical Director of Aurora Clinics), however, in many ways supports the UK Watchdog statement:

“There really is no need to panic. At Aurora Clinics, we have treated a lot of patients with PIPs and they are not terrible implants, there is just a question mark about their quality and the validity of the silicone. Some that I have removed have been intact, some ruptured; but the same can be said for many of the much older makes of breast implant.”

So what should you do if you are concerned about your breast implants? Mr. Richards’ advice is simple: “Firstly, find out what type of implant you have. If it is not PIP, there is no need for concern unless you particularly feel there is something wrong with your implants. If they are PIP, then try to return to the surgeon who originally provided your implants. If this is not possible, Aurora would be happy to schedule a free consultation for you. We are specialists at implant removal and exchange, know exactly what we are dealing with and can arrange an ultrasound or removal surgery for you if required.”
