Aurora Clinics announce sponsorship of England women rugby players
Plastic surgery group supports England's rugby stars in 2013-14
The team at UK based plastic surgery group Aurora Clinics believe in promoting a healthy, active lifestyle to their patients. To that end, they have just announced their sponsorship of three members of the England women's rugby team.
The company, which has 12 plastic surgery clinics across the UK, may not seem the obvious choice to sponsor female athletes - the majority of their work involves enlarging women's breasts, after all.
But the three players - including scrum half Georgie Gulliver and hooker Vicky Fleetwood - have a personal connection with Aurora. Consultant Plastic Surgeon (and Aurora Clinics' Surgical Director) Mr Adrian Richards met Georgie while she was working between rugby tours in the operating suite of the Three Shires Hospital in Northampton.
Over chats in the operating theatre, where Georgie would talk about her exploits on the rugby pitch, Mr Richards found himself amazed at her dedication. Rugby training at the highest levels of the women's game requires incredible commitment, with intense training most days of the week after a full day's work - usually followed by gruelling 10 minute ice baths.
In many cases, the women's rugby team train and play alongside their male counterparts and train and prepare just as hard, yet receive far less recognition and, more crucially, less sponsorship.
Learning about this unequal treatment inspired Mr Richards and Aurora to help. Aurora's sponsorship of the players for the 2013-14 season will cover the players' insurance, giving them more time to dedicate to training, rather than working long hours to support themselves. Being able to focus more on their sport should pay dividends on the rugby pitch - and help the England team perform to their full potential.
Georgie, who plays top-class rugby for Lichfield as well as England, has an upcoming tour with the England team. Mr Richards and the whole Aurora team will be watching eagerly to see how they get on.
All the surgeons, nurses, skin therapists and support staff at Aurora Clinics wish the England team the very best of luck for the new season!
