Japanese Professor Becomes Autoliv Advisor

Japanese Professor becomes Autoliv Advisor (Stockholm, Jan. 17, 2003) He replaces Professor Hermann Appel from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, who died at the end of last year. Professor Ono is the Executive Chief Researcher at the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) and a Visiting Professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He holds a Doctorate Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Nagoya University. Professor Ono, who started his research career in 1974, has made significant contributions to improving the performance of protection systems for car occupants and vulnerable road users. In his most recent research, which has been conducted in cooperation with experts in clinical and legal medicine, he has studied the impact tolerance of the human head and neck, and helped clarify the injury mechanism behind whiplash injuries. Koshiro Ono has received several prestigious awards including the Award for Safety Engineering Excellence from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States. He is also a member of several international and Japanese boards and organizations, such as the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Impacts (IRCOBI), the International Harmonization of Research Activities (IHRA), where he is a technical expert of the Biomechanics Working Group; the Traffic Safety Committee of the Japanese Society of Automobile Engineers, where he serves as Chairman; and the Board of the Japan Council of Traffic Science. The other external members of the Autoliv Technical Advisory Board include Professor Murray Mackay (Chairman) from the University of Birmingham, U.K.; Professor Jeff Crandall from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, USA; and Professor Per Lövsund from the Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.
