Together with customers, employees and suppliers, Axfood – along with the Willys, Hemköp and PrisXtra chains – is supporting Save the Children's relief work in the horn of Africa.

"We are challenging all other retailers to participate in collections for the victims of this hunger catastrophe," says Ander Strålman, President and CEO of Axfood.

Willys and Hemköp are donating lump-sums or together with a number of the chains' suppliers donate a share of their revenues from selected products to Save the Children.

The Parent Company Axfood AB is contributing to the collection with a lump-sum donation of SEK 100,000. Parallel with this, the Group is encouraging its 7,000 employees to donate money to Save the Children.

At Willys and PrisXtra stores, customers can donate their bottle and can deposit money to Save the Children's relief work in the horn of Africa.

During the past half-year, Willys customers have donated SEK 1 m and PrisXtra customers have donated SEK 171,000 by pressing the "Donation" buttons at deposit machines. During the same time, the cooperation between Willys and a number of suppliers has raised an additional SEK 1 m for Save the Children.

"In view of the desperate situation in the horn of Africa, I hope that the collection this autumn will provide even more," says Strålman.

By publishing information on Axfood's intranet about the disaster and how to send money to Save the Children, Axfood's management hopes the Group's employees will contribute to the collection.

Axfood has been cooperating with Save the Children since 2009 and has been a main sponsor of the organisation since 2010. During most of this time Axfood's support has been directed to long-term development projects in Ivory Coast. In connection with the earthquake in Haiti and civil war in Ivory Coast, support was redirected to Save the Children's disaster relief in both countries.
