Dagab reduces its climate impact

Dagab is building wind power units at its two main distribution centres - Backa in Gothenburg and Jordbro in Haninge(Stockholm). This is one of the measures where Dagab is sharply reducing its climate impact, a key part of the Axfood Group’s environmental work.

“The wind power units will make a valuable contribution to energy requirements in our distribution centres,” comments Anders Agerberg president of Dagab. “Furthermore they will make our environmental initiatives visible and increase awareness among all our staff. This is just as important.”

The wind power units are just part of Dagab’s efforts to reduce its climate impact. Energy measurement systems are also being introduced in the refrigeration and freezer rooms in Backa and Jordbro in order to reduce energy consumption.

Transports of food play a key role in food’s climate impact, although this is considerably less than the impact from production. During the autumn Axfood’s logistics company Dagab will start implementation of a number of measures that will reduce the climate impact of these transports.

The introduction of environmentally friendly pallets will have the greatest effect on climate impact. These eco pallets are manufactured from recyclable plastic and weigh about half as much as today’s wooden pallets, which will greatly reduce fuel consumption. The pallets can be stacked into each other so that they take up far less space than conventional pallets. This will increase the load factor in the vehicles which will lead to less truck transports and reduced fuel consumption.

Another way to influence fuel consumption is to monitor each individual vehicle using a Fleet Management System which Dagab is currently implementing.

In order to reduce the climate effect of the diesel used, Dagab will start to use the diesel that Preem has started to produce using approximately 20 per cent renewable raw material. Preem's filling stations close to Dagab’s distribution centres in Jordbro, Jönköping, Borlänge and Gothenburg will soon offer this greener diesel. When Preem is able to supply large volumes of this greener fuel will be of major significance for Dagab’s climate impact..

During the autumn Dagab will test a rail transport solution to transport imported products from Gothenburg to Jordbro. Rail transport will be limited initially, but can be expanded.
