The State Geotechnical Institute has granted project co-financing of a PFAS purification study

Axolot Solutions has together with Swedavia and Research Institute RISE been granted co-financing from the State Geotechnical Institute (SGI), in a study of cost-efficient purification of PFAS substances.

PFAS, Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, is a group of 5000 chemically similar substances that have received more and more attention lately. Just recently, the Ronneby municipality was sentenced to pay damages to residents whose drinking water contained high levels of PFAS.

PFAS has been used in different contexts – in everything from firefighting foam to paper and textiles. When PFAS substances started to be produced around 1950, the general perception was that they were harmless. Today we know that this is not true and that they on the contrary can have many negative health implications.

- Where the concentration is high, the health effects are of course bigger. Therefore, it is urgent to remove them and to do it in a cost-efficient way. SGI granting co-financing in this project shows that we are beginning to take the PFAS situation seriously, says Martin Ragnar, President and CEO of Axolot Solutions.

In this coming project, the water will first be purified with Axolot’s technology. Then it shall be polished with activated carbon. The project will be conducted in collaboration between RISE, Swedavia and Axolot Solutions and will be co-financed by SGI. The project starts immediately and shall be finalized by February 2022. For Axolot, the project will lead to in-depth knowledge of how different PFAS substances are impacted by the AxoPur purification and give an opportunity to study the combined efficiency of AxoPur and activated carbon polishing.
