EBOLA OVERVIEW: History And Now

Report this content

Ebola is a rare yet deadly disease caused by infection with a strain of the Ebola hemorrhagic fever virus. The ongoing Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries. While Ebola is extremely infectious it is not extremely contagious, as the virus is not transmitted through the air. The current outbreak in West Africa is said to be the largest and most complex Ebola outbreak since the virus was first discovered in 1976. In fact, in the present epidemic, there have been more reported cases and deaths than all other outbreaks combined. Countries such as Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, which are the most severely affected, have very weak health systems, lacking both human and infrastructural resources.
Many of these areas do not have fresh water or an abundance of food. As of August 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. According to WHO, “there is no specific treatment or vaccine” for Ebola, and the fatality rate can be as high as 90%. Where medical care is available, patients can be given supportive care, which includes providing fluids, electrolytes, and food. As of mid-November, the World Food Program reported an estimated 200,000 people are having problems getting food, as a result of the Ebola outbreak. The same source also suggests that as many as 750,000 people could lose access to affordable food by March 2015. It is clear that the food transport system has been severely disrupted.

There have been widespread speculations that an outbreak of this deadly Ebola virus might be experienced in the nearest future. And many experts are convinced that this will not be the last Ebola outbreak in Africa. WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan has suggested that at least 22 African countries “have the ecological conditions, the wildlife species, and the hunting practices that favor a return of Ebola at some time in the future.” In the meantime, the world must do everything it can to prevent the further spread of this deadly disease.
