Bawat BaaS Ready to Service the Port of Hamburg: Setting the Standard for Environmental Responsibility
Pittsburgh, USA, 14th May 2024 – The Authority for Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture (BUKEA) in Hamburg, Germany has become the first major European authority to issue a discharge permit to Bawat BaaS. This permit allows for mobile reception, treatment, and discharge of ballast water from vessels in the port of Hamburg, marking a significant step forward in environmental stewardship.
With full implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention approaching in September 2024, vessels worldwide are required to comply with the D2 ballast water discharge standard. Recognizing the challenges that vessels often face in meeting the standard upon entry into port, whether from challenging source waters or an inoperable BWTS onboard, Hamburg has taken the initiative to provide an alternative approach via the “Ballast as a Service” solution from Bawat BaaS with its mobile ballast water reception facility.
The port of Hamburg will serve as the inaugural location for Ballast as a Service, employing IMO Type Approved BWTS equipment that utilizes pasteurization to neutralize organisms, thereby safeguarding natural habitats from invasive species. With permanent equipment availability in the port of Hamburg, Bawat BaaS stands ready to offer its solution to aid vessels with D2 compliance at a reduced cost compared to other alternatives.
In conjunction with the Hamburg discharge permit, Bawat BaaS proudly announces the appointment of its first Operating Partner, Jongen GmbH & Co. KG. Leveraging decades of experience in waste removal from ships in Hamburg, Jongen brings invaluable expertise and manpower to efficiently deliver Ballast as a Service.
“At Bawat BaaS, we are passionate about minimizing the environmental impact of global shipping and preserving our waterways for future generations,” says Chris Todd, VP of Global Field Operations. “Selecting Hamburg as the global launchpad for Ballast as a Service is a natural choice, given its stature as a major port facility in Germany and Europe, the cooperative spirit of BUKEA as the environmental authority, and the expertise available from our partner Jongen. Over the coming months, we aim to extend Ballast as a Service to more key ports for enhanced response capabilities.”
"Jongen is excited to partner with Bawat BaaS to offer ships a ballast water compliance solution in the port of Hamburg," says Niels Mohrenz, Managing Director. "Ballast water reception aligns very well with our core expertise in vessel waste management."
