Bawat Strengthens Position in Ballast Water Treatment in European Ship Recycling Market

Report this content

Hørsholm, Denmark, 29th April 2026, Bawat continues to build momentum in the European ship recycling segment, having successfully completed two large-scale ballast water treatment operations in Nothern Europe for the same customer. Across the two projects, more than 100.000m³ of ballast water was treated in connection with vessel recycling activities.

Both operations were carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships which entered into force 26th June 2025, where proper ballast water management is a key component of environmentally sound and compliant recycling processes.

The repeat engagement highlights increasing demand for Bawat’s Ballast Water as a Service (BaaS) model within the recycling segment. As regulatory enforcement strengthens and recycling activity in Northern Europe grows, shipowners and yards are increasingly seeking Bawat BaaS solutions that ensure compliance.

“We are encouraged to see the Hong Kong Convention being implemented in practice,” said Marcus Hummer, CEO of Bawat. “These repeat projects confirm both the scalability of our technology and the growing demand for Bawat BaaS solutions in the recycling segment. We see significant growth potential, particularly in Northern Europe, where a large number of ageing and end-of-life assets in the North Sea are expected to enter recycling in the coming years. We also expect continued traction driven by stricter enforcement and increased focus on environmentally responsible end-of-life vessel management.”

About Bawat

The development of an entirely new approach to ballast water treatment utilizing onboard waste heat to treat ballast water led to the founding of Bawat in 2011. A ballast water treatment system avoids disposal of untreated water in seas and harbors.

Bawat's BWMS is a system that is simple, cost-effective, and sustainable, build on a zero environmental impact, using standard marine components. No filters, no chemicals no UV. And is the first to market a USCG/IMO Type Approval BWMS that uses pasteurization to treat ballast water in a one-pass process. Bawat has built upon its innovative breakthrough, and now offers ballast water solutions to the maritime industry in three categories:

  • A vessel BWMS for Retrofit and New Builds
  • Mobile containerized solution for multiple vessel usage in a port, on a ship or for rigs
  • Bawat BaaS - Ballast as a Service for contingency services in ports and yards

Bawat is an engineer-driven company that is rooted in the tradition of Danish maritime innovation and with a deep maritime insight: bawat.com. Bawat is listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market.
