The annual Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN) Awards celebrate impactful industry achievements, underpinned by international energy negotiations and transactions that promote and embody the principles of the AIEN in the energy industry. Once again, AIEN has recognized achievements in five important categories: Deal of the Year, Discovery of the Year, Venture of the Year, Energy Transition Initiative of the Year and CSR Campaign of the Year, occurring between January 1 and December 31, 2022.

Florent Rousset, Global Managing Director, GaffneyCline and Chair of the 2023 AIEN Awards Committee, comments, “Energy markets underpin global economies and these awards, nominated by AIEN members, recognize projects that have the greatest impacts. While oil & gas will remain essential commodities for modern societies to thrive, we also must look to all forms of energies and technologies that support achieving global climate goals. These awards cover the broad spectrum of energy markets today and for the future and the quality of nominations this year has been outstanding.”

Deal of the Year

The Deal of the Year award recognizes an outstanding and noteworthy M&A transaction and the 2023 winner is the Eni Acquisition of Tango FLNG Unit from EXMAR Group. Eni’s purchase of the Tango FLNG floating liquefaction plant has a value ranging between $572-694 million, depending on the plant’s performance during the first six months. Deployment is expected to be at the Eni Congo-operated Marine XII offshore block in the Republic of Congo. The project also includes a 10-year charter for a Floating Storage Unit (FSU) that will be based on a converted LNG carrier.

Venture of the Year

This year’s Venture of the Year has been awarded to Repsol for its sale of 25% of its upstream business to EIG to create a strategic partnership. Repsol has enhanced its energy transition objectives by partnering with EIG in a sale valued at $4.8 billion. The newly formed, gas-weighted exploration & production company comprising Repsol’s entire global upstream oil and gas business, will focus on further strengthening, high grading, and decarbonizing of its global portfolio.

Discovery of the Year

This award is given to a company who has made a highly significant oil or gas discovery, or an addition to discovered resources through exploration and appraisal activities. For 2023, the award goes to TotalEnergies, QatarEnergy, Impact Oil and Gas, and NAMCOR for their Venus-1X discovery in Namibia. The discovery of light oil with associated gas was on the Venus prospect, offshore southern Namibia, where the Venus 1-X well encountered approximately 84 meters of net oil pay in a good quality Lower Cretaceous reservoir. TotalEnergies is the operator with a 40% working interest, alongside QatarEnergy (30%), Impact Oil and Gas (20%) and NAMCOR (10%).

Energy Transition Initiative of the Year

The Energy Transition Initiative award recognizes those that are leading the way to create a sustainable future. This year’s winner is Hess and the Government of Guyana for their landmark Carbon Credits Purchase Agreement. Hess Corporation will purchase $750 million carbon credits between 2022 and 2032 from the Government of Guyana, as part of Hess’ commitment to address climate change and achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The agreement supports Guyana’s efforts to protect the country’s vast forests and to provide capital to improve the lives of its citizens through government investments as part of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy.

CSR Campaign of the Year

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an increasingly important part of business and society. It combines the need for profitability with the need for company values to ensure a sustainable future at every level. This year’s award has been given to Chevron for its SI Project developed at Jesus Municipal Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Chevron Brazil helped create a newly renovated pediatric wing to ease the stress for patients, families, and health care staff. Featuring charming sea creatures and friendly robots, the new, cheerful settings are designed to ease children’s stress and anxiety during time-consuming examinations, which often involve invasive procedures.

“These awards are from our members for our members and reflect the importance of the projects and campaigns undertaken by the energy sector and the role they have to play in meeting global energy initiatives,” concludes John Bridges, AIEN Executive Director.
