This year’s Venture of the Year has been awarded to Petrobras, TotalEnergies, Petronas and QatarEnergy for their Sépia Project. Sépia is a pre-salt oil field in the Santos Basin, located in water depths of around 2,000 meters off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and started production in August 2021. The consortium formed by Petrobras (Operator) (30%), Total (28%), PETRONAS (21%) and QE (21%) paid to the Federal Government a signature bonus in the amount of BRL 7,138,000,000.00 and paid to Petrobras a compensation in the amount of USD 3,200,388,219.00. The Sépia Project remains as one of the largest oil & gas projects in the history of the sector.

This award is given to a company that has made a highly significant oil or gas discovery, or an addition to discovered resources through exploration and appraisal activities. For 2024, the award goes to Eni (Operator), Neptune Energy and Agra Energi for their significant gas discovery with Geng North-1. Geng North-1 was drilled to a depth of 5,025 meters in 1,947 meters water depth, and encountered a gas column about 50m thick in a Miocene sandstone reservoir with excellent petrophysical properties that has been subject of an extensive data acquisition campaign. Preliminary estimates indicate a total structure discovered volume of 5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas in place with a content of condensate estimated up to 400 Mbbls.

Energy Transition Initiative of the Year

The Energy Transition Initiative award recognizes those that are leading the way to create a sustainable future. This year’s winner is INPEX for its Clean Hydrogen/Ammonia Project in Kashiwazaki, Japan. INPEX commenced construction of surface plant facilities for the Kashiwazaki Clean Hydrogen/Ammonia Project to be implemented at the INPEX-owned Higashi-Kashiwazaki Gas Field in the Hirai district of Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The project is the first in Japan to build an integrated hydrogen and ammonia value chain from production to usage.

CSR Campaign of the Year

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an increasingly important part of business and society. It combines the need for profitability with the need for company values to ensure a sustainable future at every level. The HortCanaã Agricultural Hub Project, which benefits 95 families, was carried out with the resettlement of Vila Nova Canaã to promote the community's financial sustainability, generate employment and income and develop their autonomy.

“These awards, nominated by AIEN members, shine a spotlight on projects that have made the most significant impacts in the energy sector. The quality of this year’s nominations has been truly outstanding, showcasing the incredible advancements and initiatives our members are driving forward,” says John Bridges, AIEN Executive Director.
