We need to look with an eye to the future to understand where we are standing in the present

Gabrielle Finger is Commercial Advisor, CCUS, Chevron New Energies. She became a member of AIEN in 2011 and is co-chair of the 2023 International Energy Summit.

The 2023 International Energy Summit is now less than two months away and being co-chair has been a wonderful experience so far. We have been working diligently ahead of the summit, taking the pulse of where we are as an industry so we can create the best possible event.

The 2022 summit in London focused on the energy transition as a concept, whereas the upcoming Miami conference will take the theme even further and take a deep dive into what the next steps in the energy transition could be for the industry.

As well as being mindful of our main theme, The Energy Trilemma, we have focussed our attention on both traditional and transitional energies, as well as the societal impact we have as an industry. We have tried to create panels that addressed these themes to create a big picture of the present day and future of the energy industry.

In creating the panel sessions, we’ve been examining what the world is facing with regards to energy affordability, sustainability and reliability (the Energy Trilemma). What is trending in the industry as we move through the energy transition & how do we move forward without ignoring our roots? How can we continue to meet the global demands as we move into the future. An example is the LNG panel, which is going to discuss how LNG, a more traditional energy, is vital to fuelling the energy transition.

It is also extremely important to me and my co-chairs that the entire industry is represented in terms of regional location, ensure we have a mix of male and female speakers, and also making sure that younger voices, our future leader, are heard. To this point, I am very excited about our panel focussing purely on how we need to support and develop our energy leaders of the future.

And we are also pushing ourselves to look at areas where the organisation is less well-versed. The panel I am most excited about in this space is ‘Understanding How Critical Minerals Influence the Energy Trilemma’. Critical Minerals are a new space for AIEN but vitally important; we will be relying on these minerals to help create the new technologies needed in the energy transition. The energy industry is traditionally at the forefront of technological development, and as we advance the energy transition, this is no exception. We need to be versed in critical minerals & we are bringing this panel to our members for that precise reason.

We need to look with an eye to the future to understand where we are standing in the present. Understanding where the world is trending in the new energies, like blue hydrogen or how LNG will shape our progress forward, will define the next 3-4 decades of our industry. Bringing experts to inform, educate and develop these conversations at the IES is an excellent opportunity for our delegates to continue to be global leaders in the energy industry.
