OM Pharma, a global Geneva-based biopharmaceutical company, leader in the prevention of recurrent respiratory and urinary tract infections, also active in the treatment of vascular diseases, wins the 2021 Geneva Economy Award

Geneva, Switzerland, 21 September 2021 - The award will be presented this evening by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services (CCIG), the State of Geneva, the Office for the Promotion of Industries and Technologies (OPI) and the Office for the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Violence (BPEV), during a ceremony at the ‘Bâtiment des Forces Motrices’ in Geneva.

The Geneva Economy and Innovation Awards, created in 2012, aim to honour companies whose reputation and influence convey a positive and dynamic image of Geneva. OM Pharma's application was distinguished in particular by its economic and social policy. Aiming at the long-term development of the company, all its profits are reinvested in research and development (R&D) and the expansion of its Geneva site. The independent jury also noted the scientific and commercial interest of the products and the hundred jobs recently created by the biopharmaceutical company.

OM Pharma is a private company founded in Geneva in 1937. It is a leader in the prevention of recurrent respiratory and urinary tract infections and is also active in the treatment of vascular diseases. The company employs a total of 400 people, including 300 in Geneva and 40 in Fribourg. OM Pharma also has a strong network of international partners. The Geneva site serves as the company's headquarters, comprising support functions, the R&D and biotech center, which covers the entire supply chain, from bacterial cell culture to finished products.

A year ago, in October 2020, Etienne Jornod, former Executive Chairman of Vifor Pharma and Galenica, acquired the company together with entrepreneurs whose ambition is to continue the global expansion and to invest CHF 250 million over the next few years in the development and manufacturing capabilities of products to treat acute and chronic immunological disorders resulting from inflammation and infections.

"This award is a great encouragement for our new development project with a long-term perspective, in the interest of patients and employees," says Etienne Jornod, Executive Chairman of OM Pharma.

Josef Troxler, CEO of OM Pharma, commented: "The true value of our company lies in the human quality of our teams, their entrepreneurial spirit and their exceptional skills. The Economy Award is therefore primarily the achievement of all OM Pharma employees. We also warmly congratulate the other three award winners: the company Loyco for the Equality Award, the start-up Plair for the Innovation Award and the NGO CyberPeace Institute for the Special Jury Award."

This honour once again highlights OM Pharma's ability to become a leading global biopharmaceutical company focused on improving the lives of patients with respiratory and inflammatory diseases around the world.

About the Geneva Economy Awards

The Geneva Economy Awards cover three distinct awards. The Geneva Economy and Innovation Awards were created in 2012, with the aim of promoting and enhancing the Geneva economic sector. They also aim to honour companies whose reputation and influence convey a positive and dynamic image of Geneva. In 2021, the Equality Prize was introduced, to recognize a company that has made special efforts to implement this principle in its daily practice. The Awards Jury occasionally awards a Special Prize. These awards are traditionally presented each year in the autumn.

Awarded by a jury of 13 personalities from academia and the business world, they are based on a series of economic and social criteria. For the Geneva Economy and Innovation Awards, the company's social policy, respect for the environment in its business model and professional training (number of apprentices or trainees in training) are taken into consideration.

For the Geneva Economy Prize, the technological, scientific and commercial interest of the company's products or services as well as the number of jobs created in the three years preceding the award of the Prize are also analysed.
