In collaboration with SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Internationella Engelska Skolan (IES), Fryshuset Primary Schools in Stockholm and Kista International School, Skill Shift Initiative has launched a third fast track to provide support to primary schools during the coronavirus crisis.

Skill Shift Initiative uses personnel who are available on a temporary basis to support Swedish workplaces that are under pressure or in need of urgent assistance as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

The first two fast-tracks focused on healthcare, but the coronavirus is also affecting primary schools. Most primary schools remain open and are conducting classes as usual but are finding it increasingly difficult to cover staff absence caused by coronavirus.

For primary schools experiencing increased teacher absence, employees who are temporarily available from other industries can step in to help until the summer holidays.

Under the guidance of IES management, 25 SAS employees will be offered a three-day intensive fast track course combining practical and theoretical learning. Topics covered include lesson planning, teaching, an overview of pedagogy and common classroom situations. The first two days include a mixture or digital and classroom study at an IES school on Södermalm, Stockholm. The final day is a practical internship at Internationella Engelska Skolan, Fryshuset’s Primary Schools or Kista International School. After completing the course the aim is to aid in lifting the burden faced by schools and teachers in the classroom.

Financing is being provided by Skill Shift Initiative’s partners and IES.

During this three day practical and intensive course, we will give participants the tools they need to support education. Schools need to be strengthened with more staff in several different areas to remain open during a strained staffing situation. The course will provide an introduction to conducting lessons but also how to manage a class and support young people. It feels fantastic to be able to support our teachers with more adults in school, says Anna Sörelius Nordenborg, CEO of IES.

– We have a situation where the airline industry has employees who are temporarily laid-off while in other parts of society there is a massive need for assistance. SAS wants to be an active part of contributing to something that is beneficial to society as a whole by matching competence and commitment. SAS employees can help relieve some of the burden on staff in primary schools that need support as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, says Karin Nyman, Vice President Brand and Communication at SAS.

– The most important thing in this challenging situation for primary schools is to ensure that all our ninth graders get the support they need to fulfill their academic requirements. This initiative will be a great help to these students so they can reach their goals says Johan Oljeqvist, CEO, Fryshuset.

– Kista International School will participate in the project by sharing our experience and knowledge with participants so they are prepared for assignments. Kista International School views this initiative very positively because it can support schools during a very difficult time says Johan Segerfeldt, Principal of Kista International School.
