Betonilaatta starts manufacturing first Geoprime® paving slabs to SRV’s destination

Turku-based Betonilaatta Ltd will be the first concrete manufacturer to start producing paving slabs which are based on Betolar's low carbon Geoprime® solution, where cement is replaced with industrial sidestreams.

“The demand for low-carbon concrete products has grown rapidly in our customer base. We wanted to be the first to bring a solution to the paving slab application area. Paving slabs are a wide product group. The demand for low-carbon products in both large and consumer destinations is growing. Geoprime now makes it possible to start production,” says Rami Lahti, CEO of Betonilaatta.

SRV’s Lentue is the first destination for the paving slabs

Betonilaatta has entered into the first contract with SRV for the supply of low-carbon Geoprime paving slabs. These first slabs will be installed at SRV's Lentue which is a new site near Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. 23 apartments will be built in the residential area.

The upcoming Lentue site includes renewable energy solutions and sustainable construction. The building is heated by emission-free geothermal energy and the solar panels placed on the roof produce the electricity used by the geothermal heat pumps.

“Responsibility and sustainable development are becoming key factors in construction projects. Landscaping products such as slabs are the first step on the road to low-carbon concrete products. The development will certainly soon be transferred to other concrete products and structures as well,” says Ulla Kangasmaa, Project Manager at Lentue from SRV.

Life cycle thinking requires a set of different solutions

Lentue will become a site that is based on life-cycle thinking, where construction solutions meets well-being, economic value and the interests of residents and the environment for years to come. The site will be built in an environmentally responsible manner.

“Energy efficiency and the carbon footprint are attracting more interest from home buyers. The community and the sharing economy are also gaining in importance, especially among young people. There will also be a multi-species dynamic planting in the yard that supports biodiversity in connection with the urban stormwater run-off,” says SRV's Kangasmaa.

In Europe, construction consumes more raw materials than any other industry, about half of all raw materials. Construction solutions have a very significant impact on combating climate change. Solutions based on life-cycle thinking can contribute to the long-term functioning of society.

“We actively monitor the development of materials and aim to use sustainable materials in our sites, such as wood and low-carbon concrete and steel. We minimize material waste in construction and recycle the surplus. In terms of materials, durability and longevity are also important criteria for us, to which we pay special attention,” says Lotta Toivonen, SRV's Development Manager.

Betolar's Geoprime® enables low-carbon solutions

Betolar has developed its Geoprime solution that can utilize industrial sidestreams in the production of concrete. Replacing cement in concrete reduces CO2 emissions from the raw materials by up to 80 percent. For the paving slabs, cement is replaced with slag which is a sidestream from the steel industry.

“In Finland, we are now starting to move concretely with Betonilaatta and SRV. In Finland's demanding weather conditions, we can show their durability. Paving slabs are an important landscaping material in Central Europe where Betolar has also carried out product development work with manufacturers,” says Janne Rauramo, Betolar's Executive Vice President of EMEA Sales.
