Building sustainable cities: Finnish company Betolar brings low carbon Geoprime solution to Indonesian concrete market

JAKARTA, 24 May 2022 - Climate risks are rising across the globe, and we need to find solutions to change the course rapidly. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights a gap between the needs and actions taken – partly due to a lack of options. Construction industry has a significant carbon footprint but has not been able to cut the emissions for cement, which causes 7% of the world’s CO2 emissions.

The Indonesian government has been taking an active approach to find innovative solutions to build sustainable cities. Indonesia needs to reduce its GHG emissions throughout society to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 or earlier. Target is to challenge the country to focus on more holistic and systemic solutions which include energy, ICT and sustainable city solutions. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia is signing an MOU today with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland to  enable deeper collaboration in the fields of sustainable, clean and renewable energy and energy efficiency between Finland and Indonesia.

Finnish materials technology company Betolar, joining the ministerial delegation, has developed the Geoprime solution for the production of durable, sustainable and low-carbon concrete by utilising industrial side streams as an alternative for cement. Betolar thus enables the green transition of different industries and makes concrete a sustainable building material with significantly less energy requirements compared to traditional cement.

“Finland is driving sustainable innovation in multiple areas. Betolar’s low carbon solution for the Indonesian construction industry is a great example of a circular economy in the fast developing market. Indonesia plans to build a new city, Nusantara, in Borneo as a capital, showcasing the principles of sustainability, unity and connectivity in a Smart City. We will follow the development closely and strongly support Finnish companies in their participation in this US$33 billion project,” says Ann Mari Kemell, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs of Finland,

“The concrete industry is facing a pivotal moment in the global fight against climate change, and Indonesia is taking urgent action in changing the way cities are built”, says Juha Pinomaa, Head of Asia, Betolar. “Betolar’s Geoprime solution can unlock the construction industry’s challenge to reduce their CO2 emissions. It’s not surprising that we are seeing rapid growth especially in South East Asia where urbanisation is one of the fastest in the world.”

“The team at Betolar has the knowledge, local expertise and ambition to help Indonesia transit to green construction materials. It’s exciting to see Geoprime encouraging industries to take action and implement climate-friendly processes while boosting our collective efforts to create a sustainable future,” adds Matti Naakka, Betolar’s Business Development Director in South East Asia.
