Aquaculture company Flatlantic transports fresh seafood in boxes made with Certified Recycled EPS (CREPS) from BEWI, reducing CO\2\ footprint by 30 per cent.
The Portuguese flatfish producer Flatlantic is using fish boxes made with Certified Recycled EPS from BEWI, which is boxes based on recycled EPS (expanded polystyrene) material. The performance and quality of the material are maintained, securing food safety and optimal transport, while at the same time reducing the carbon footprint from packaging by 30 per cent.
In the process to produce Certified Recycled EPS, a mix of recycled and virgin feedstock is used, and third-party certification ensures that the material’s properties are allocated to the industries and products where they are best suited.
“With excellent thermal insulation and durability, packaging of EPS is the best solution for transporting fresh fish. Boxes of Certified Recycled EPS reduce the use of virgin raw materials and lower the environmental footprint of our operations,” says Laura Roque, Environmental Manager at Flatlantic.
Through its Circular division, BEWI collects approximately 40 000 tonnes of used EPS per year and recycles this to new raw material (rGPPS). This is either used directly in the production of new end-products, such as insulation boards for the construction sector, or as feedstock in the production of Certified Recycled EPS. Like all EPS, Certified Recycled EPS is fully recyclable.
“Providing our customers with circular solutions has long been a priority for us at BEWI. With Certified Recycled EPS, companies can increase the use of recycled content in packaging and reduce waste. This can also result in avoidance of plastic taxes, while at the same time meeting the requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations,” says Christian Bekken, CEO of BEWI ASA.
