A new Bibby Distribution warehouse and distribution facility in Corby has been officially opened this week by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Patron of Transaid.

The 212,000 ft2 facility in Max Park acts as a central hub for Bibby Distribution’s operations in the East Midlands supporting a variety of key customers, as well as being the second Primary Consolidation Centre (PCC) the 3PL operates on behalf of Morrisons.

In a ceremony in front of Bibby Distribution employees, as well as key Bibby customers, Her Royal Highness said: “Bibby has supported Transaid for more than a decade. It is a real bonus for a charity to have that continuity of funding. The impact Bibby has made by helping Transaid to train drivers in Africa is very significant.”

She added: “Bibby has been an enormous part of the logistics industry and has helped to set high standards for the sector. Corby is well placed and well served by infrastructure and I am sure this will add to the reputation of Bibby.”

Paul Kavanagh, Managing Director, Bibby Distribution, said: “We are honoured to have our new flagship distribution centre opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Our Corby site is a crucial component of our ongoing commitment to developing flexible and innovative services for our customers. Our first two PCCs have already cut inventory costs to Morrisons by £6m and when all five centres are open by the end of 2015, we expect to have increased that to £20m,while improving on-shelf availability.”

Bibby Distribution has developed a PCC network for Morrisons entirely from scratch. By creating a bespoke warehouse management system, it is able to consolidate Morrisons’ stock near to its suppliers, before sending out multi-sku, multi-vendor loads to Regional Distribution Centres across the country, slashing costs, carbon and fuel miles.

Occupying a 15 acre site, the three-bay warehouse features 16 dock levellers and two level-access doors, boasting capacity for more than 30,000 pallets. This enables Bibby Distribution to support a number of major customers from the same premises, including a major three year contract with Japanese food manufacturer Mizkan.

Bibby Distribution is a founding member and a long-term supporter of Transaid, the official charity of the transport and logistics industry. Bibby provides valuable financial support each year through both corporate donations and employee-led fundraising initiatives and donation matching. In recent years Bibby Distribution has directly supported Transaid’s driving training projects in both Zambia and Tanzania, arranging for one of its driver training consultants to spend a fortnight on secondment in each country.
