Big Akwa has reached a central milestone in the development of its Alby project. Together with partners FREA and Undeko, the company is now starting the detailed planning phase, a critical stage that forms the basis for construction of a land-based facility with capacity to produce 6,000 tons of rainbow trout annually.

Through the partnership with FREA and Undeko, Big Akwa gains access to advanced technical expertise and long-standing experience in land-based aquaculture. This provides the project with a clear budget, a realistic timeline and robust tools for risk management in every phase of implementation.

“This marks an important milestone for Big Akwa. We are not only building a fish farm but also showing how the future of food production can be designed in close collaboration with industry and the environment,” says Daniel Brännström, CTO of Big Akwa.

“Working closely with Big Akwa and Undeko, we’re proud to contribute our proven RAS solutions. With unmatched CAPEX/OPEX, this project sets new standards for sustainable aquaculture.” says Thorsten Vammen, CEO FREA Solutions.

The Alby project is part of Big Akwa’s vision to strengthen Sweden’s self-sufficiency in fish while contributing to the green transition. With circular solutions and strong industrial partnerships, the company is developing a model for sustainable food production with global relevance.

Quick facts

The facility will be located in the Alby industrial area in Ånge Municipality and will use land-based RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) technology to produce up to 6,000 tons of rainbow trout annually. The project is based on a model of industrial symbiosis, by utilizing excess heat and oxygen from the hydrogen production. In addition to energy efficiency, the facility will contribute to circular resource flows by recovering nutrients for the production of biochar, fertilizers, and microbial proteins. Operations are planned to begin in 2026, with full capacity expected by 2029. The project is being developed in partnership with RES, Ånge Municipality, and a network of technical and environmental experts.
