Prize presentation evening

In the past 12 months Bigbury Golf Club has seen its ladies team win a county event, some closely fought trophy competitions with many first time winners, and the course in great condition whether bright sunshine or heavy rain. It therefore fell to the annual Prize Presentation evening to celebrate all of the club’s successes in 2011, with polished trophies, champagne and a great atmosphere enjoyed by the 90 members and guests who attended.

The evening began with speeches from club President Terry Moore, Captain John Elliott and Lady Captain Pauline Skinner, who all mentioned the great success of the Ladies’ team winning the coveted President’s Trophy for the second time in three years. They also remarked how generous the members had been in giving to the club’s charities, in particular the Lady Captain’s charity the Triangle Centre in Kingsbridge, for which members raised in excess of £700.

As the trophies were handed out it became clear who had enjoyed a great year on the course: John Hailey did the double by taking the Club Championship for the first time along with the Scratch Knockout cup, seniors Dick Jemmett and Nick Hanbury won two of the three seniors’ pairs events together, and Joanne Shorrocks (nee Hurley) came back from several years in Wiltshire to regain her Club Championship title.

Whether a trophy winner, a club official or a supporter who had come up to enjoy the evening, a great night was had by all, and next year’s Captains, David Wain and Sally Darke, said that they looked forward to making next season as good as the last.

A four-ball Texas scramble was held on the day, with Jack Green, Colin Southern, John Winzer and Paul Vaggers taking the top prize with a nett 56.35. Karen Graddon, Dave Graddon, Robin Leach and Jim Stewart were second with a nett 57.2, and Vanda Irish, Adam Keates, Jo Shorrocks and Nick Shorrocks finished third with a nett 58.5.
