On July 6, Biolin Scientific entered into an agreement to acquire Sophion Bioscience A/S. Sophion is a leading developer and supplier of instrumentation and consumables which enable rapid, high throughput automated patch clamping (APC) analysis for the functional characterization of living cells. Patch clamping is the only direct method of investigating the function and characteristics of ion channels, which represents an increasingly important focus for drug discovery and life science research.

Sophions core product offerings are microchip-based automated patch clamp systems that provide efficient reliable and high-quality data through continuous unattended operation on a truly industrial basis. Sophions products are used in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies around the world and the company’s customer base includes nearly all of the major pharmaceutical companies. Sophion was founded in July 2000 as a spin-out from biotechnology company NeuroSearch. The number of employees is approximately 50 and the revenue in 2010 was USD 14.7 million.

-       Biolin’s strength thus far has been within material science at the same time as we have made efforts to increase our presence within life science. Due to Sophion’s strong position within life science we will now be able to reach new customer groups. Sophion has good growth and a growing installed base of instruments which promotes sales of consumables,” comments Biolin Scientific’s CEO Jan Wahlström.
