Bittium Develops the Finnish Defence Forces a Software Router for Tactical Communications
The software router offers a flexible way to add routers to tactical communications networks, which enables forming even bigger network entities for the needs of mobile troops.
Bittium Corporation press release on December 5, 2023, at 3.30 p.m. (CET +1)
Bittium has received a purchase order from the Finnish Defence Forces for the development of a software-based router for tactical communications. The software router will complement Bittium’s portfolio of routing products supplied to the Finnish Defence Forces for tactical communications networks. Currently the portfolio includes Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system’s Bittium TAC WIN Tactical Router, Bittium Tough SDR™ radios, and Bittium Tough Comnode™ device. The software router offers an alternative and a flexible way to add routers to the network when there is a suitable virtual platform available for the purpose. This enables forming even bigger network entities for tactical communications by mobile troops.
The software router also enables the extension of the same routing domain in a fixed backbone network by combining different tactical networks together. When all devices are using the same routing protocol, the network can always select the most cost-effective path for communications. Tactical networks formed with Bittium products are connected to the fixed backbone network by using for example the Bittium OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing) routing protocol. The protocol enables free mobility for the network routers without the need for the user to configure the network when its topology or the quality of the connections change. This seamless and automated routing supports real time situational awareness and effective command and control of troops.
The value of the purchase order is approximately EUR 4.4 million and the development work will be carried out during the years 2024 and 2025.
