Bluefors Opens Expanded U.S. Production Facilities – Becomes Biggest Producer of Dilution Refrigerators in North America

Bluefors, the world leader in manufacturing cryogenic measurement systems for quantum technology, held the opening for its expanded production facility in Syracuse, New York. This expanded facility will increase the production capacity for its Cryomech-branded cryocoolers, enhance its R&D operations, and enable Bluefors to begin manufacturing dilution refrigerators at the site – for the first time in the USA.

The rapidly growing quantum technology industry needs cryogenic systems, such as dilution refrigerators and cryocoolers, to develop applications like quantum computing, quantum communications, and quantum sensing. The expansion of the facility, originally constructed in 2020, will increase the capacity of Bluefors’ Syracuse facilities by almost 45%.

Bluefors’ CEO, Jonas Geust, says, “Our expansion in Syracuse makes Bluefors the biggest manufacturer of dilution refrigerators in the United States. With this investment, we are strengthening our production capabilities and skills to support the growth of the quantum sector and helping to advance the industrial development of quantum technologies in North America.

Quantum computers require cryogenic systems, as quantum chips need temperatures as low as 10 millikelvin (near absolute zero or -459.67 Fahrenheit, -273.15 Celsius) to perform precisely. The global quantum technology market is expected to grow by an annual rate of 17 % towards 2040, meaning the demand for dilution refrigerators and cryocoolers is rapidly increasing.

At the same time, access to cryocoolers that provide stable, cool environments at higher temperatures are critical for other key fields such as medical and life sciences, and academic research. With its expansion of the Syracuse facility, Bluefors is significantly increasing production of its Cryomech cryocoolers for these applications.

Rich Dausman, President of Bluefors’ Syracuse operations, continues: “This expansion will enable us to increase Cryomech cryocooler production here in Syracuse, and continue pushing the boundaries of cryogenics. It also builds on the historic foundations that Cryomech has established, showing Bluefors’ continued commitment to the Syracuse community.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer said, “I have often said that the next frontier of quantum technology is being built in Upstate New York, and with this major investment into their new state-of-the-art cryocooler manufacturing facility, Bluefors is leading the charge towards that frontier right here in Onondaga County. This electrifying investment will add over 35,000 square feet to Bluefors Syracuse footprint, nearly doubling their capacity for their Cryomech Cryocoolers, and providing ample room for the company to keep pace with explosive growth in the market for advanced cryocooling solutions. With Upstate New York on the fast-track to national and international recognition as a hub for advanced technologies – from semiconductors to quantum computing – a goal I have long led the fight to achieve, including with my CHIPS and Science Act, which increased federal investment in quantum computing, the combination of Bluefors global leadership in ultra-low temperature systems with Cryomech’s 60+ year legacy of manufacturing top-of-the-line cryocooling solutions in Syracuse is a recipe for success. As we celebrate today’s Grand Opening, I look forward to all that Bluefors will bring to New York State’s quantum ecosystem and communities across Central New York.

With the newly expanded Syracuse facility, Bluefors continues its commitment to investing in its US operations and supporting its customers with deeper integration, increased availability, and fast service response times. Simultaneously with the expansion, Bluefors opens a spare parts hub in Syracuse to serve customers in the US and Canada. With dilution refrigerator spare parts now available in Syracuse, North American customers will benefit from an improved service level and shorter delivery times.

The expansion adds more office, manufacturing, warehouse, storage, shipping, and receiving space, increasing cryocooler testing capacity and doubling throughput. The expansion lays the groundwork for the future growth of Bluefors operations in the USA.
