    Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Boliden complete dam construction milestone with autonomous transport

    Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) and Boliden have completed the autonomous transport project at Boliden's Garpenberg site in Sweden. The project was the first step under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Volvo and Boliden in 2023, and it marks an important milestone in a collaboration that also includes future projects. As a part of the project, material was moved from an on-site quarry on Boliden premises and used to reinforce a local dam and heighten the dam wall.     Write-down of assets in Garpenberg

    As previously communicated, the abnormal seismic activity at the Garpenberg mine in March caused major damage. Mining positions in the Garpenberg mine are located in three separate ore bodies, with the Lappberget ore body being the dominant one. Major damage has been observed in the upper parts of Lappberget. Furthermore, a significant amount of media such as ventilation, pressure air systems, water management and infrastructure for electricity and backfill paste as well as some mobile equipment have been damaged.     Consequences of abnormal seismic activity at the Garpenberg mine

    The abnormally high seismic activity in Garpenberg has decreased and mining production at low levels will commence in the second quarter. The first quarter throughput was just under 0.8 Mton instead of the expected slightly over 0.9 Mton at already communicated grades. All inspections are not yet complete but production in the most affected part of the mine is not expected to resume in 2026. Until further notice, Garpenberg's production is therefore estimated to be around 30 percent of the guided capacity of 3.7 Mton per year.     Boliden has decided to invest in a new hoist system at Garpenberg and an industrial demonstration plant for the production of supplementary cementitious material at Rönnskär.     Update regarding stopped production at the Garpenberg mine

    In connection with the increase in seismic activity to abnormal levels in the Garpenberg mine on Saturday evening, March 14, the mine was evacuated and mine production was halted. Production in the concentrator continued until Sunday, after which this production was also stopped for planning reasons. The seismic activity has since decreased and initial inspections of the mine began on Wednesday, March 18.     Call for change negotiations at Boliden Kevitsa

    Due to the quadrupling of mining tax in Finland, Boliden Kevitsa has called for change negotiations to prepare to adopt the operations. All in all, up to 285 employees are considered to be affected by the change of operations.     Boliden has entered into a syndicated revolving credit facilities agreement with 12 banks totalling EUR 1,000 m. The facilities consist of two tranches: a five-year tranche of EUR 500 m and a three-year tranche of EUR 500 m. Both tranches include two one-year extension options.     Boliden has applied to the European Commission to designate the Nautanen deposit as a strategic project under the Critical Raw Materials Act.The Nautanen copper deposit is located in central Norrbotten, about 15 km northwest of Aitik copper mine.
