Clinched championship for Shelby American Racing

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Legendary race car driver Bob Bondurant celebrated the 45th anniversary of becoming the first American to win the World Manufacturer’s Championship, surrounded by family, friends, and employees of his world-renowned driving school, on July 1, 2010.

Bondurant began his racing career on motorcycles as a teenager in Southern California before moving on to sports car racing. After winning the SCCA West Coast “B” Production Championship, he drew the interest of Carroll Shelby, who invited Bob to drive for his Shelby American Racing team.  Bob took a class victory at Le Mans in 1964, and won seven out of ten races the following year on his way to the FIA’s World Manufacturer’s Championship in the Sports Car class. Bondurant clinched the prestigious title on July 4, 1965, in Reims, France.

“We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the anniversary of this amazing accomplishment with Bob,” said Jerry Arms, General Manager, Bondurant School. “With Independence Day approaching this weekend, it’s a great time to celebrate the first American manufacturer and driver to win the World Championship.”

Following other successful drives for the Ferrari and BRM Formula One teams, Bondurant founded the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in 1968. More than 250,000 students ranging from professional racers and celebrities to teenagers, military and police officers have learned from Bondurant’s expertise.
