Annenberg Foundation Donates $1,100,000 to Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness in Bluemont, Va.
Donation is the second major gift from the Annenberg Foundation and is dedicated to constructing the Wallis Annenberg Heroes Garden for wounded military, veterans and their families
The Annenberg Foundation has donated $1,100,000 to Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness, the nation’s first permanent and private rural retreat for wounded U.S. military, veterans and their families. This gift is the second major contribution from the Annenberg Foundation and will support the construction and programming of the Wallis Annenberg Heroes Garden at the new 37-acre retreat.
“Boulder Crest Retreat provides a very special place for wounded military, veterans and their families to heal and reconnect,” said Wallis Annenberg, Chairman of the Annenberg Foundation. “We are very pleased to contribute again to this very worthy organization.”
The Wallis Annenberg Heroes Garden at Boulder Crest Retreat will be a fully ADA-accessible therapeutic garden that features fruit trees, vegetable and herb plants and resting areas. The 120’ by 90’ walled garden will be the cornerstone of the retreat’s horticultural and culinary therapy programs and will provide practical experience and guidance on how to grow and prepare nutritious meals and facilitate healthy eating. Boulder Crest Retreat is the first-of-its kind, permanent and private rural retreat that provides free accommodations and recreational and therapeutic activities and programs to help wounded military service members, veterans and their families reconnect and recover.
“We are extremely grateful to Wallis Annenberg and the Annenberg Foundation for this very generous donation and their continued support of Boulder Crest Retreat,” said Ken Falke, founder of Boulder Crest Retreat. “Building this walled horticultural sanctuary has been a dream from our first design discussions for the retreat and it is wonderful to see the garden project come to life.”
Boulder Crest Retreat opened in September 2013 and is located in Bluemont, Va., just 50 miles outside of Washington, D.C. The country sanctuary offers guests private, ADA-accessible accommodations and opportunities to relax, recover and spend time together as a family in a peaceful and natural setting while enjoying activities such as hiking, fishing, archery, yoga and meditation. The retreat also hosts group retreats and life skills programs and workshops.
Boulder Crest Retreat is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that is entirely funded entirely by private donations by individuals and organizations from around the country. For more information about the retreat, please visit www.bouldercrestretreat.org.
