First “hoedown for healing heroes” event to be held at the new 37-acre rural retreat in Loudoun County, Va. for wounded military, veterans and their families

Live bluegrass music, dancing and barbecue are among the bevy of festivities that will be part of the first Boulder Crest Retreat Hoedown to support Boulder Crest Retreat for Military and Veteran Wellness, the nation’s first  rural retreat for wounded U.S. military personnel, veterans and their families. The hoedown will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the retreat located at 18370 Bluemont Village Lane, Bluemont, Va., 20135.

“Boulder Crest Retreat is a very special place right here in our community that provides essential support to help our nation’s wounded military and their families heal and reconnect,” said Mackie Christenson, a Leesburg resident and co-chairperson for the Boulder Crest Retreat Hoedown. “This downhome country event is a great way for the community to support Boulder Crest Retreat and see the beautiful retreat firsthand.”

The country hoedown is being organized by residents from Leesburg’s River Creek community and other Northern Virginia community members. The event will feature a New Orleans-style barbecue, entertainment and an assortment of activities including live music by Virginia bluegrass band Amanda Murphy and the Lost Indians, dancing, a pie-baking contest, wagon rides, retreat tours and a silent auction. The Honorable Blanquita Walsh Cullum, a distinguished journalist with more than 30 years in radio, television, print and online media, who has emceed more than 2000 events, will serve as the evening’s master of ceremonies.

This fundraising event will benefit Boulder Crest Retreat, a 37-acre rural retreat that opened in September 2013. The retreat provides free accommodations and recreational and therapeutic activities and programs to help wounded military service members, veterans and their families reconnect and recover. The country sanctuary offers guests private, ADA-accessible accommodations and opportunities to relax, recover and spend time together in a peaceful, natural setting while enjoying activities such as hiking, fishing, archery, yoga and meditation. The facility also hosts nonprofit group retreats and life skills programs and workshops.
