EVANS CYCLES GUIDE TO WINTER ROAD CYCLING

The winter months can bring bitter frosty mornings, early sunsets and torrential rain, but cycling and commuting through the autumn and winter isn’t all doom and gloom.

Stay ahead of the cycle pack this season with the Evans Cycles guide to urban cycling.

WINTER CYCLING TIP 1: STAY MOTIVATED

Have your cycle kit ready to go the night before, so there is less chance of bailing on the bike

Check your bike is ready to go – tyres inflated and batteries in lights

Arrange to ride with a friend so you’ve got somebody else expecting you to ride

WINTER CYCLING TIP 2: LAYER UP

You can adapt your cycling wardrobe as the weather changes. Here are our three outfit options to keep you comfortable through the seasons:

• Cooling Down: summer jersey and shorts with arm warmers

• Getting Chilly: base layer and long sleeve jersey with windproof jacket

• Winter Freeze: base layer and soft shell jacket with full finger gloves

WINTER CYCLING TIP 3: BE SEEN

• Use cheap back-up front and rear lights to increase your visibility to cars

• If cycling on unlit roads, invest in a good front light so you can see the road in front of you

• Use hi-vis kit for extra visibility

• Avoid wearing all black

WINTER CYCLING TIP 4: BEWARE OF HAZARDS ON THE ROAD

• Riding in the rain can cause increased braking time

• Manhole covers, road markings and leaves are particularly slippery when wet so try to avoid them

• Drains and potholes can also be disguised by water so be careful not to veer into the road when one takes you by surprise

• Disc brakes give the best braking power in the wet so consider this when buying a bike you plan to use in all weathers

• If you really can’t face the weather then try out a turbo trainer for indoor training sessions
