If you overindulged this Easter, now is the perfect time to burn off those egg-stra calories by training for a marathon or half marathon distance at Liverpool’s second Pedal it Pink in Sefton Park on Sunday 18 April. By getting on your bike for just one hour to train for Pedal it Pink, you can burn off approximately 530 calories which is the equivalent of: • One chocolate Easter egg • Two hot cross buns (one bun is 250 calories) • One slice of simnel cake Denise Chilton, a health and wellbeing trainer who also appears on Linda McDermott’s show on BBC Radio Merseyside, took part in Pedal it Pink last year and has already signed up for the next event in two weeks’ time. She said: “Now that we have lighter evenings and Easter is over there is no excuse to get on your bike and get fit while supporting a good cause. Cycling is a great form of exercise, which gives you more energy and decreases stress levels. It’s also a very social activity, so why not encourage your friends and family to sign up with you?” Pedal it Pink, sponsored by Santander, has a variety of routes to choose from to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. So far 1,800 women across the UK have pedalled it pink to raise more than £140,000 for breast cancer research at three events in Liverpool, Nottingham and Essex. If you would like to join the 400 women already signed up for Liverpool’s second event and help us put the brakes on breast cancer, visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700. It costs £15 for the marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 530 calories an hour.
