A Golden opportunity to run for breast cancer research
Press Release For immediate release: 28 September 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org A Golden opportunity to run for breast cancer research Breast Cancer Campaign is urging runners across the UK to lace up their trainers and run for research at the Virgin London Marathon 2011. With less than two weeks to go before the deadline closes for Golden Bond places on Friday 11 October, now is the perfect time to apply for a place on the winning team to beat breast cancer. In 2009 106 runners sped off from the starting line dressed head to toe in pink and raised a whopping £180,000 to help Campaign fund innovative world-class research. And with the next London Marathon just six months away, the charity needs you to sign up, start training and raise funds to support the 46,000 people diagnosed with this disease in the UK each year. Karen Lambert, Events Executive at Breast Cancer Campaign, said: “We have 40 Golden Bond places available so if you want to run the marathon for Campaign please contact us before Tuesday 5 October for an application pack. We’d also love runners with their own place in the marathon to run for us and we were thrilled by the amount of people who chose to raise money for Campaign last year. This year we hope to make our team even bigger and pinker, so please sign up today and help us make a difference to the many thousands of people affected by breast cancer.” Minimum sponsorship is £1,500 and each runner who signs up will automatically become a member of the Linford’s Allstars team, captained by Olympic running champion and Campaign supporter Linford Christie. As an Allstars runner you will also receive a professional Ronhill running vest and an information pack crammed with nutritional and training advice from Linford. To become an All Star and run the marathon for Campaign, please call the events team on 0207 749 3700 or email Londonmarathon@breastcancercampaign.org ENDS Picture caption: Runners at London Marathon 2010 Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 104 research projects, worth over £16.1 million, in 38 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
