A Marathon effort to beat breast cancer
Press Release For immediate release: 10 January 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org A Marathon effort to beat breast cancer Breast Cancer Campaign is urging runners across the UK to fight the festive flab and run for research at this year’s Virgin London Marathon. With just four months to go until the big day on Sunday 17 April, the charity wants runners with a ballot place to join the race to beat breast cancer. And with Christmas behind us, now is the perfect time to banish the bulge through training. Running for one hour burns up to 1,000 calories which is the equivalent of: • Six mince pies (approximately 180 calories per pie) • Three servings of Christmas pudding with brandy cream (approximately 330 calories per serving) • Four glasses of mulled wine (approximately 245 calories per glass) Karen Lambert, Events Executive at Breast Cancer Campaign: “Christmas is always a time for overindulgence but what better way to get back in shape than by training for the London Marathon? So far we have 80 runners who are committed to running and raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign and we’d absolutely love more people to run for us. “Every day 125 people are sadly given the news they have breast cancer and around 12,000 people will die from the disease in 2011, so if you haven’t chosen a charity run for, why not shake off the post-Christmas blues and start training while supporting this very worthwhile cause?” In 2010 106 runners sped off from the starting line dressed head to toe in pink and raised a whopping £175,000 to help Campaign fund innovative world-class research, so if you would like sign up please contact the events team on 0207 749 4114 or email supportercare@breastcancercampaign.org If you have your own place there is no minimum sponsorship amount and each runner who signs up will automatically become a member of the Linford’s All Stars team, captained by Olympic running champion and Campaign supporter Linford Christie. As an All Star runner you will receive a fundraising pack including a Breast Cancer Campaign running vest, sponsorship forms and lots of support from the charity on the day.
