Press release For immediate release: 24 September 2009 Press contact: Katie Power, 020 7749 3720 kpower@breastcancercampaign.org Breast Cancer Campaign launches new pink event for October Breast Cancer Campaign has launched a new fundraising event to encourage local communities across the UK to support the charity during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Paint the Town Pink is a new scheme being launched in Reading, York, Chester and Edinburgh where local tourist attractions, businesses, groups, clubs and individuals are being encouraged to host pink-themed days and activities in support of the charity. The event is being rolled out following the success of the Isle of Pink last year, a brand new initative where Campaign encouraged everyone on the Isle of Wight to turn the Island pink for the month. The initative was a great success, raising over £20,000 for vital breast cancer research, and the charity hopes that this year they will be able to double this amount. Councils in each of the proposed areas have given the charity their full support and highlights for the month include pink fundraising activities on match days at Reading FC, sponsored shark dives at Deep Sea World in Edinburgh and a Scare it Pink sleepover at York dungeons. Colin Norford, Breast Cancer Campaign’s Senior Community Development Manager, said “Paint the Town Pink is a new adventure for us, but judging by the huge amount of support we’ve received from the Isle of Wight we’re sure we can make it a success. Breast Cancer Campaign funds breast cancer research all across the UK and Ireland, so it’s incredibly important for us to have a regional presence for our supporters. We’ve had a great response from each area so we’re hoping Paint the Town Pink is something we can expand further in the future.” Anyone can get involved in Paint the Town Pink, and there are three easy ways to join in. Either take part in one of Campaign’s national events, such as wear it pink on 30 October*, attend one of the Paint the Town Pink events being held near you or hold a pink fundraising event of your own. For more information on how to organise your own event, or to take part in any of the Paint the town Pink events, call 020 7749 3700 or visit www.breastcancercampaign.org * Schools can take part at any time during October ENDS Picture caption: Divers at Deep Sea World, Edinburgh, launch Paint the Town Pink with a pink shark dive Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 101 research projects, worth over £14.1 million, in 41 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
