Press Release For immediate release: 14 September 2009 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Carol pedals in pink for breast cancer research Local cyclist, Carol Doherty, from Didcot, Oxon, will get on her bike this October to take part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s women’s only cycling event, Pedal it Pink. The Insurance Loss Adjuster will take on a full marathon distance with her daughter Jordan to support breast cancer research after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2007. Following several operations in January and February, Carol had Chemotherapy and radiotherapy until September 2008. Carol said: “I had breast cancer last year and was amazed at how many people it affects - I had incredible support from two friends that had both gone through it, as well as my family and other friends. Being a keen sportsperson, taking part in Pedal it Pink will be an enjoyable way to raise money and awareness of the cause. I put on a lot of weight last year while being ill, but through exercise and a healthy diet, I have lost almost three stone. I have only another five pounds to go before I’m back to my normal weight. Now that I’m in training for Pedal it Pink, I’m sure it won’t take me that long.” Carol is taking part in the event at Nottingham’s National Water Sports Centre on Sunday 25 October and hopes to raise £1,000 between them in sponsorship. If you would like to help them reach their target, please visit www.justgiving.com/caroldoherty2 and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the 5k Family Lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Carol and Jordan and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
