Press Release For immediate release: 6 July 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Fitness group urges women to get in the saddle for breast cancer research A team of fitness fans from Loughborough will get back on their bikes this October to take part in the second annual Pedal it Pink for Breast Cancer Campaign. Last year fitness instructor Kathy Riley and 30 members of her gym class at Loughborough Leisure Centre took part in the cycling challenge and the team are urging more women across Loughborough to join the pink revolution at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham on Sunday 17 October. Kathy said: “We had such a great time at last year’s event – it was lovely to see so many women dressed in pink and having a good time while raising money for breast cancer research. I’m thrilled that my team managed to raise thousands of pounds and we’re geared up to do the same this year.” She added: We’d absolutely love more women to join Team Kathy for Pedal it Pink 2010, as breast cancer affects too many women in the UK each year. Almost everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with this disease so the more women that can take part and help the charity’s mission to beat breast cancer, the better!” Team Kathy is taking on the marathon distance and hopes to raise £3000. If you would like to sponsor the team please visit www.justgiving.com/Kathy-Riley-Smith and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the 5k Family Lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. At last year’s event 550 women cycled around the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont and raised a whopping £35,000. In total, four Pedal it Pink events across the UK have raised more than £200,000 to help Campaign fund vital breast cancer research. If you would like to join Kathy’s team and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. It costs £15 for the full marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. All cyclists are encouraged to raise a minimum sponsorship of £100.
