Press Release For immediate release: 2 March 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Four weeks to Pedal it Pink! Calling all mothers, daughters, sisters and friends – Breast Cancer Campaign wants you to dig out your bike and cycle for vital research at the charity’s exclusive women-only event, Pedal it Pink. So far, more than 300 women have signed up to put the brakes on breast cancer at River Lee Country Park on the Herts/Essex border on Sunday 28 March and we need you to get together with your family and friends to support the 46,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. In April last year, Olympic cycling champion and Pedal it Pink ambassador Victoria Pendleton, took part in the first ever event in Liverpool with her mum. She said: “I really enjoyed the event; it was refreshing not to ride on a road for a change. It was quite challenging in some parts but me and my mum had lots of fun and so did the rest of the women out on the course.” She continued: “The Liverpool event was a fantastic success and I’m so thrilled to be supporting the one in Lee Valley too. Not only is cycling a fabulous way to get in shape but the money you raise from taking part will help Breast Cancer Campaign continue funding vital breast cancer research.” In 2009, Breast Cancer Campaign’s two Pedal it Pink events, in Liverpool and Nottingham, raised more than £100,000. Samantha Gold, Senior Events Manager at the charity, said: “We’re so pleased to launch Pedal it Pink in the South East and hope that lots of women in the region will take up this unique challenge and contribute to a great cause. The first two Pedal it Pink’s have gone really well, so come on ladies, dig out your bike, find your pinkest outfit and take part in this fun cycling adventure while raising money for charity.” To join the pink revolution, visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700. It costs £15 for the marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
