Press release For immediate release: 24 May 2010 Press contact: Katie Power, 020 7749 3720 kpower@breastcancercampaign.org Give a little time to help save lives - Volunteers needed now! To mark National Volunteers Week (1 – 7 June) Breast Cancer Campaign is calling on all enthusiastic fundraisers across the UK to consider becoming a volunteer to help the charity beat breast cancer. National Volunteers Week is an annual event which celebrates the contributions made by millions of volunteers across the UK. This year Breast Cancer Campaign wants to use this key time of year to recruit more volunteers to support the charity and needs your help. Volunteers support the charity in a number of ways and there is a job suitable for everyone. So whether you’re able to help by organising local fundraising events, taking part in supermarket collections or even doing a bit of internet research, your support could make all the difference to the 46,000 people that are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Lauren Baskett, Breast Cancer Campaign’s Community Development Manager, said “Our volunteers are vital to our work. Without them we couldn’t make the most of our regional fundraising opportunities and their support greatly helps us in our mission to beat breast cancer. Volunteering can be great fun and it’s the perfect way to make new friends in your area. So why not use National Volunteer’s Week as the perfect incentive to sign up and help make a difference for people with breast cancer everywhere.” Anyone can volunteer, no matter how old you are or where you live and there are a number of tasks available, meaning there is a job for every skill set and ability. All you need to do is decide how often you want to help and Campaign will provide you with all the information you need to get you started. If you would like to register as a volunteer, or for more information, please call 020 7749 4104 or email hshaw@breastcancercampaign.org ENDS Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 113 research projects, worth over £17 million, in 40 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
