Press Release For immediate release: 13 September 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Joanne pedals in pink for breast cancer research Local cyclist Joanne Smith from Monkerton, Exeter will help put the brakes on breast cancer this month by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s women’s cycling event, Pedal it Pink. The HR Adviser at Devon County Council will join hundreds of women at Exeter Quay for the South West’s first ever Pedal it Pink on Sunday 26 September after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. She was the first person in her family to have breast cancer and was shocked to be diagnosed at such a young age, 37 years. However, she has made a good recovery and is glad to be fit enough to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Campaign. Joanne said: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2008 and had to undergo chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. This year I’ve started cycling with a friend and when I saw this event I thought it was the perfect event for me to raise some money for something so obviously personal to me.” Joanne is taking on the full marathon and is hoping to raise as much as possible for her cycling challenge, so if you would to sponsor her, please visit www.justgiving.com/josmith1971 and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink, sponsored by Santander, has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the 5k Family Lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Joanne at Pedal it Pink and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. It costs £15 for the marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap.
