Press Release For immediate release: 2 March 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Katryna’s second pink ride to fund breast cancer research Local cyclist Katryna Knight from Elstow in Bedford will gear up to beat breast cancer this March by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s women-only cycling event, Pedal it Pink. The Brochure Account Manager and Director of KnightStar Events will join hundreds of women at River Lee Country Park on Sunday 28 March to support her former boss and ex-work colleague who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly her former colleague was diagnosed shortly after giving birth to a little boy and is now undergoing treatment. Katryna, who took part in the first ever Pedal it Pink in Liverpool last April, said: “Last year I completed the full marathon at Pedal it Pink in Liverpool to show my support for an ex-boss who had been diagnosed with breast cancer the year before. This was the most exhausting challenge I have ever taken on with months of training hard in freezing conditions and no real understanding of the time it was going to take. I was so proud of my efforts and felt amazing whilst cycling intensely for two and half hours, knowing that I had helped raise money for charity.” She added: “This year I am even more determined after hearing about my ex-work colleague and close friend who was diagnosed with cancer shortly after having her first baby last year. She never returned from maternity leave and is currently going through chemotherapy. As well as being a total shock, I feel disheartened for her partner’s and son’s situation and I’m hoping that by continually supporting charities that fund vital research, there will come a time when I won’t be frightened of losing a friend.” Katryna is taking on the full marathon challenge in the park, which is situated on the Herts/Essex border, and hopes to raise £500. If you would like to help Katryna reach her fundraising target, please visit www.justgiving.com/Katryna-Knight and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Katryna at Pedal it Pink and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. It costs £15 for the full marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
