Press Release For immediate release: 10 May 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Less than one week to Pedal it Pink There is still time to sign up for Edinburgh’s Pedal it Pink cycle event, which will turn Holyrood Park pink for Breast Cancer Campaign next Sunday (16 May). Women from all over Scotland will gear up to beat breast cancer and budding cyclist Laura Halliday from Bughtlin has signed up after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 aged 37. Laura said: “I was fortunate to catch it early and after chemo and radiotherapy my prognosis is pretty good. Fitness has always been a big part of my life and three months after finishing my treatment I completed the silver stage of Maggie’s Bike and Hire! The treatment and care I received throughout my illness was terrific and I like to do what I can to help raise awareness and money for the ongoing research into this terrible disease.” She added: “I was delighted to hear of Pedal it Pink as cycling is my favourite hobby so having an event that included biking and raising money for this fantastic cause was just what I was looking for and I hope many more women across Edinburgh will join me on the day.” Laura is taking on the half marathon distance in the park and hopes to raise £250. If you would like to sponsor Laura, please visit www.juystgiving.com/LauraH-PedallingitPink and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance, which are for women only. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Laura at Pedal it Pink and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please register on the day from 10am onwards at the event village which is located near Dynamic Earth and Scottish Parliament. It costs £15 for the full marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. There are no bike hire facilities on site so please come ready to cycle. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
