Press release For immediate release: 19 May 2010 2010 Press contact: Katie Power, 020 7749 3720 kpower@breastcancercampaign.org Local breast cancer survivor treks to Peru for charity An adventurous fundraiser from Tamworth is getting ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime when she attempts to trek to the famous ruin of Machu Picchu, Peru, later this year in support of Breast Cancer Campaign. Transport Manager Beverley Hill, 50, will begin her ten-day challenge on 22 October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in the ancient city of Cusco. From here she will then trek across the multi-terrain of Lares Valley trail until she reaches the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu – one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Beverley was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 and also has many family and friends who have been affected by the disease. Her mother sadly died of ovarian cancer three years ago and her father has also recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. So when she turned 50 last year she decided to celebrate this milestone by signing up to a new challenge and was keen to raise money for Breast Cancer Campaign at the same time to help beat this disease. Beverley said “Cancer has sadly touched the lives of many of my close family and friends, including myself, however I feel like one of the lucky ones. I believe I’ve been given a second chance in life and I want to make the most of it. I wanted to challenge myself and when I saw this trek to Peru I knew straight away it was the perfect option. It’s because of the research being funded by charities like Breast Cancer Campaign that more women are now surviving breast cancer, so hopefully my contribution will go some way to helping them continue their worthwhile work.” Beverley is aiming to raise £1,500 from her challenge to help Campaign beat breast cancer by funding world-class research. She has also recently lost two stone in preparation for her challenge with the help of Fitcamp UK whose organisers have also lost relatives to the disease. Breast Cancer Campaign has teamed up with Health & Fitness magazine to create this popular trek and is encouraging all adventurous fundraisers across the country to sign up now.
