Press Release For immediate release: 2 August 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local friends’ angelic race to beat breast cancer Local runners Katy Guest from Hazel Grove and Lorraine Creech from Heald Green will be pulling on their fairy wings and polishing their halos this summer to take part in the adidas Women’s 5K Challenge in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. The duo will join Campaign’s Guardian Angels running team for the race in London’s Hyde Park on Sunday 5 September after Lorraine was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Katy is also running in memory of her best friend’s mother who sadly passed away from breast cancer in 2009. Lorraine said: “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and underwent surgery, chemo, radiotherapy and reconstruction. I also have friends and colleagues who have been diagnosed and sadly know friends who have died from this disease, so running for breast cancer research is a cause very close to my heart.” Katy added: “My best friend’s mother Therese Meek passed away in 2009 after being diagnosed the year before, she is our shining star and sorely missed. I feel Lorraine is an inspiration and I’m so grateful to all the professionals who helped her during the course of her treatment. We’re excited to run for Breast Cancer Campaign and hope lots of people will sponsor us and help the charity take a step close to beating breast cancer.” The pair, who are also running with another friend Karen Richardson, are hoping to raise a substantial amount for their running challenge. Every day 125 people are diagnosed with breast cancer, so if you would like to join Katy and Lorraine on the Guardian Angels team for Campaign, please contact the Running team on 020 7749 3700 or email womenschallenge@breastcancercampaign.org Ends Picture caption Lorraine Creech and Katy Guest Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 108 research projects, worth over £16.5 million, in 39 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
