Carmel Loughlin, 39, from County Tyrone, began fundraising for Campaign after sadly losing her sister, Paula Gallen, to breast cancer in February 2008. Last March, Paula’s love of running and walking inspired Carmel, Paula’s husband, Pat Gallen, and his sister Christine Lynch, to organise a successful 5k run and three mile Friendship Walk in Castlederg, County Tyrone, to celebrate Paula’s life and help beat breast cancer. The second annual Paula’s Run and Walk was held on 14 March this year, with over 1000 people taking part. The team has managed to get the whole Castlederg community involved and the town has responded amazingly in helping to raise a huge amount of money for the cause. The team has not only helped raise breast cancer awareness in Northern Ireland through Paula’s Run, holding pink lunches and running the Dublin Marathon, but also outside of Ireland by organising a fundraising night at a friend’s pub in England which raised over £3,000 in one evening. In total the team has raised over £15,000 for the Pink Ribbon Tribute Fund set up in memory of Paula. Speaking on behalf of the Paula’s Run team, Carmel said, “We’re delighted to have been nominated for Breast Cancer Campaign’s ‘Fundraiser of the Year’ award. We are proud to support the charity and it is thanks to the amazing support from the Castlederg community that we have managed to raise an incredible amount of funds to help fund the life-changing research aimed at beating the disease and helping to support local sufferers through the Castlederg Palliative Care fund.” Pamela Goldberg, Breast Cancer Campaign’s Chief Executive said, “Our awards ceremony publicly recognises the amazing achievements and contributions by our fundraisers and supporters over the last 12 months towards Breast Cancer Campaign’s research. Their support is essential to helping us achieve our mission of beating the disease and I wish the Paula’s Run team and everyone else who has been nominated the best of luck.” The Paula’s Run team will find out if they have been chosen out of four nominees at Breast Cancer Campaign’s awards ceremony on 17 June 2010 at the House of Lords.
