Press Release For immediate release: 21 February 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local runner’s marathon effort to beat breast cancer in memory of friend Runner Cara Ingram from Watford has laced up her running shoes to train for the Virgin London Marathon in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. The accountant will join thousands of runners for the 26.2mile race on Sunday 17 April in memory of her close friend Julie Rooke who sadly passed away from breast cancer in June 2010. Cara said: “Julie was in her forties and had battled the illness for four and half years. Since her diagnosis I have become very aware of breast cancer and how many women seem to have the illness, so I’m pleased to have the opportunity to assist in fundraising for a charity that aids breast cancer research.” She added: “Julie and I ran a 10k cancer charity run in 2008 when she already had secondary cancer and she was an inspiration to us all. In her twenties, Julie also ran the London Marathon, which made her family very proud, so in addition to my fundraising, it will be an honour to run in her memory. Although I jog regularly I never thought I could complete a full marathon, but having lost Julie it has inspired me, particularly when I feel so fortunate to have my health. I therefore hope lots of people will sponsor me and help Breast Cancer Campaign continue funding world-class research into breast cancer.” Richard Harrington MP for Watford, has given Cara his full backing for the running challenge. He said: “I'm delighted that Cara in my constituency is running the London Marathon for Breast Cancer Campaign. Funding breast cancer research is a fantastic cause as this disease affects so many people across the UK, so I wish her well with her fundraising and good luck for the run. I’m sure the local community will be fully behind her.” To help Cara reach her fundraising target of £2,500 please visit www.justgiving.com/Cara-Ingram and donate what you can, This year around 48,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK and sadly approximately 12,000 will die from this disease. So if you have a ballot place in this year’s Virgin London Marathon and would like to make a difference to the lives of all those affected by breast cancer, please join Cara on Campaign’s team.
