Press Release For immediate release: 14 June 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local runner’s pink race to beat breast cancer in memory of best friend Budding runner Kay Craigie from Rendall in Orkney, has pulled on her running shoes to train for the Bupa Great North Run in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. The social care worker will join 54,000 runners on the starting line for the 13.1 mile race in Newcastle on Sunday 19 September in memory of her best friend Rachael who sadly passed away from breast cancer aged 30. Kay said: “I chose to do the Great North Run for breast cancer because the girl who was my best friend from the age of 10 was diagnosed with breast cancer at 26 (no family history). Unfortunately Rachael died when she was 30 years and 39 days old and we were still best friends when she died. As a bit of a quirk of fate Rachael would have turned 40 on the day of the race and I can’t really think of anything I would rather be doing on this day than to be raising money that I hope will save other families and friends going through what we have been through.” Kay is hoping to raise as much money as possible for her running challenge so if you would like to sponsor her, please visit www.justgiving.com/kay-craigie and donate what you can. Last year 300 Campaign runners wore their pink running vests with pride and raised a whopping £160,000 for vital breast cancer research. This year the charity has 100 places available on its team so if you would like to join Kay at the Great North Run, please call the events team on 020 7749 3700 or email greatnorthrun@breastcancercampaign.org before Friday 2 July. All runners who sign up with Campaign will automatically become a member of Linford’s All Stars – an exclusive club captained by Linford Christie, who offers supporters helpful training tips and nutritional advice. Runners will also receive a fundraising pack containing a Breast Cancer Campaign running vest and lots of fundraising ideas.
