Local runner’s third marathon effort in tribute to Dad
Press Release For immediate release: 7 February 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local runner’s third marathon effort in tribute to Dad Budding runner, Alex Adames from Harpenden, Hertfordshire, will complete a hat-trick of London Marathons this April as she trains for her third run while raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign. The financial operations manager, who celebrated her 30th birthday at last year’s race, will join thousands of runners on the starting line on Sunday 17 April in memory of her father, George, who sadly passed away from breast cancer in 1994. Last year, Alex completed the marathon in 4 hours, 30 minutes and raised £2,397 to fund breast cancer research. She is hoping to beat her personal best and continue raising money for a charity that’s close to her heart. She said: “My dad used to be an avid runner so when he died I vowed to do something in his memory and thought running would be the best way to pay tribute to him. I think I caught his running bug as I’m about to complete my third marathon and it’s always a fantastic atmosphere on the day. “I’m thrilled to have raised more almost £9,000 in total for Breast Cancer Campaign, but I think more work is needed to help raise awareness of male breast cancer, as a lot of men don’t know they can get this disease. I hope people will give generously and help the charity take a step closer to beating breast cancer.” Every year around 340 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK compared to 47,700 women. Sadly 75 men will die from this disease in 2011 so if you would like to sponsor Alex and help fund vital breast cancer research, please visit www.justgiving.com/Alexandra-Adames and donate what you can. If you have a guaranteed place in this year’s Virgin London Marathon and would like to make a difference to the lives of all those affected by breast cancer, please join Alex on Campaign’s team. For more information, please call the Events team on 0207 749 4114 or visit www.breastcancercampaign.org. If you have your own place there is no minimum sponsorship amount and each runner who signs up will receive a fundraising pack including a Breast Cancer Campaign running vest, sponsorship forms and lots of support from the charity on the day.
