Press Release For immediate release: 14 April 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local sisters’ pedal power for breast cancer research Local cyclist Clare Brewer and her sister Fiona Murphy from Hough Green in Widnes will gear up to beat breast cancer this Sunday by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s women-only cycle event Pedal it Pink. The pair will join hundreds of women at Liverpool’s second annual event in Sefton Park on Sunday 18 April to support her sister-in-law and best friend who have both recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her sister in law discovered she had breast cancer in a routine mammogram and, following surgery and treatment, was back to work three months later. Her best friend found a lump during a self examination and is recovering at home following recent surgery. Clare, who is a community matron at NHS Knowsley, said: “I’ve been very impressed with their courage and positive outlook. The treatments and choices nowadays are excellent and I think it’s important for people to know that, with early detection and diagnosis, there can be a positive outcome. I am really grateful that we have such a good screening programme and treatment in this country. I would encourage women to self examine and go for screening and don’t hesitate to get advice early if they have any concerns as there is plenty of help out there and it’s free.” Clare and Fiona are taking on the half marathon challenge in the park and hope to raise £200 each. If you would like to sponsor the pair, please email Clare at clare.brewer@knowsleynhs.uk and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Clare and Fiona, please register on the day at the event village in Sefton Park which is situated near the junction of Lark Lane and Aigburth Drive. It costs £15 for the marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
